If you want a career where you can build success without the bounds of an employer, you should consider being an independent insurance agent. Independent agents can choose to work with different insurance companies, set many of their own rules and reap the rewards of self-motivation. Texas makes a great state for driven individuals who want to win. Here’s how to become an independent insurance agent in Texas.

Steps to Becoming an Insurance Agent in Texas

  1. Prepare for Licensing Exam
Unlike many other states, Texas does not carry a pre-licensing education requirement for most applicants. This means that you can apply to take the exam without providing proof of a certain number of hours of education. Keep in mind that you’ll still need to achieve a passing grade on the exam to get your license. As such, many applicants decide to take a pre-licensing course.
Most exam preparation courses tailor education to the exam. Research your options and choose the exam that is right for your goals of starting your own independent agency.
You may need to take more than one exam depending on the authority you choose. For instance, If you choose to sell life insurance, you’ll need a different license than you would for property and casualty.
  2. Submit Fingerprints
Texas requires licensing applicants to submit fingerprints before applying for a license. You can choose a location near you and pay a fee to provide your fingerprints. As a general rule, opting for electronic fingerprinting shortens the processing time. When you submit your license application, be sure to include the receipt for the fingerprinting. This step will help to expedite your application.
  3. Take Licensing Exam
Once you are ready to take the exam and you have submitted your fingerprints, you can pay a fee and schedule a time to take the exam. It’s important to select a day and time that gives you the best chance of success. You may have the option to take the test remotely or at a specific location, depending on the exam. Once you complete the exam, you receive a score out of 100. You need to reach at least 70 to pass. If you fail the exam the first time, you can retake it for an additional fee.
  4. Apply for License
Once you have passed the exam, you can apply for your license. Be sure that the application for license date is less than one year after passing the exam. Be especially cautious of this if you’re submitting multiple applications at the same time. The Texas Department of Insurance notes that applications usually only take one business day to process, unless there are errors or omissions on the form. The department recommends filling it out as completely and accurately as possible, to minimize delays.
  5. Build Your Business
Once Texas approves your license application, you can start on your path to becoming a successful independent agent. Establishing an insurance business can take years, including the following tasks:

    • Applying to work with insurance companies as an independent agent, so you can sell their policies
    • Setting up your business
    • Marketing to potential clients
    • Completing continuing education and other requirements to renew your license

In Texas, you have to renew your license every two years. It’s best to finish your continuing education at least a month prior to expiration, to reduce delays in renewal.
